LEADERS OF NSCN (I-M) REVOLT AGAINST THEIR ‘MILITARY’ CHIEF

Why in the news?

NSCN (I-M) military leaders rebel against commander-in-chief over alleged focus on mainstream integration, signalling internal divisions and strategic concerns.

Understanding the Revolt in NSCN (I-M) Leadership:

  • Fourteen senior officers of the military wing of NSCN (Isak-Muivah) have revolted against their commander-in-chief, Lt. Gen. Anthony Ningkhan Shimray.
  • The rebellion was announced via a statement from the Eastern Flank of NSCN (I-M)’s Naga Army.
  • Gen. Shimray, also known as the ‘longvibu’ (army chief), had allegedly declared his conditional release from prison in 2016 aimed at integrating other armed groups into the mainstream.
Understanding Naga Agreement 2015:

●   Nagas agree with the government that state boundaries won’t change, abandoning the demand for Naga-inhabited area unification.

●   NSCN-IM seeks ‘Greater Nagaland’ (Nagalim) to unite 1.2 million Nagas by extending Nagaland’s borders into neighbouring states.

●   Article 371A’s special status for Nagaland may extend to Naga-inhabited areas in Assam, Manipur, and Arunachal Pradesh.
