Kudremukh Range

News: Recently, Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Limited (KIOCL) requested post-facto authorisation for the 20 years ago submergence of 700 acres of forest in the Kudremukh Range, in the centre of the Western Ghats.

The Kudremukh Range is situated in the Karnataka state’s Chikmagalur district’s Western Ghats.

These wide hills, which look out over the Arabian Sea, are joined by narrow valleys and jagged cliffs.

The Horse Face Range is another name for it; in Kannada, Kudremukh literally translates to “horse-faced.”

Its main peak, Kudremukh Peak (1892 metres), which remarkably resembles a horse’s face, gave rise to the name.

These mountains are home to Kudremukh National Park, the second-largest wildlife refuge in the Western Ghats.

For over 2000 years, Kudremukh is thought to have functioned as a landmark for mariners along the western coast.

Park National Kudremukh

It covers 600.57 sq km in the Karnataka districts of Chikkamagaluru and Dakshina Kannada.

Mostly evergreen and semi-evergreen trees make up dense forest cover.

Here you can find endangered species of rare plants like the South Indian Jewel Orchid and the Nilambur Cobra Lily.

There are also a lot of trees, such as eucalyptus, acacia, silk oaks, casuarinas, and others, among them.

The leopard, Malabar giant squirrel, sloth bear, gaur, sambar, jackal, mongoose, tiger, wild dog, common langur, and other animals live there, among other species of fauna.

Numerous bird species, including the Malabar trogon, Malabar whistling thrush, and imperial pigeon, call it home.
