  • The inaugural Khelo India Para Games (KIPG) came to an end in New Delhi, with 105 medals won by Haryana, comprising 40 gold, 39 silver, and 26 bronze.
  • Beginning on December 10, about 1,450 para-athletes from all over the nation competed in KIPG 2023.
  • With 62 medals, including 25 gold, 23 silver, and 14 bronze, Uttar Pradesh took second place. Tamil Nadu, with 20 gold, 8 silver, and 14 bronze, placed third.
  • The Games featured athletes from thirty-two states and Union Territories and the games represent a turning point in Indian sports history where participation now matters more than winning.
  • History:
    • Since its inception in 2018, Khelo India has successfully hosted 11 games, including Youth Games, University Games, and Winter Games.
    • It is a novel and first-of-its-kind program that was introduced in 2019 and acts as a one-stop shop to support the employment of people with disabilities while meeting industry demands.
    • By identifying and assisting gifted para athletes, the Khelo India Para Games initiative seeks to increase its impact and help India succeed in multi-discipline competitions.
  • Theme:
    • During the ceremony, “Ujjwala,” the official mascot—a sparrow—was unveiled.
    • This small sparrow, which stands for the pride of Delhi, is a representation of empathy and tenacity.
    • Ujjwala is the embodiment of the Khelo India – Para Games 2023 spirit, conveying the inspiring message that human spirit is unbreakable and strength can take many forms.
