KERALA VILLAGE’S EFFORTS IN BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION

Why in the news?

Thazhakara grama panchayat in Kerala’s Alappuzha district has compiled a detailed People’s Biodiversity Register (PBR), highlighting significant changes in local flora and fauna.

Key Findings:

  • Thazhakara publishes the second volume of PBR, documenting 38 sacred groves, 10 paddy polders, and 35 ponds.
  • Decline in Indian black turtle and other species due to poaching.
  • Increase in populations of rock pigeons, rufous treepies, among others.

People’s Biodiversity Register (PBR)

  • PBR documents biodiversity comprehensively, covering habitats, land races, domesticated animals, micro-organisms, and local biological knowledge.
  • It aims to preserve and manage biological diversity within specific regions.

Current Status and Implementation

  • Biodiversity Management Committees in various states have prepared 2,67,608 PBRs to date.
  • Efforts are underway to establish PBRs in every village nationwide under Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), focusing on sustainable resource use and community-level actions for environmental conservation.
