Why in the News?

  • PM addressed the inaugural ceremony of the second edition of Kashi Tamil Sangamam at Namo Ghat in Varanasi.
  • Prime Minister emphasized the emotional and creative bond between Kashi and Tamil Nadu, stating that this connection strengthens the idea of ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat.’

About Kashi Tamil Sangamam :

  • Kashi Tamil Sangamam Celebrates historical and civilizational connections between India’s North and South.
  • Aims to bridge knowledge and cultural traditions, fostering understanding of shared heritage and strengthening people-to-people bonds.
  • The Sangamam celebrates, reaffirms, and rediscovers the age-old cultural links between Tamil Nadu and Varanasi.
  • Implementing Agencies: Implementation led by IIT Madras and Banaras Hindu University (BHU).

Organizing Entities:

  • Organized by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with other ministries like Culture, Textiles, Railways, Tourism, Food Processing, Information & Broadcasting, etc.
  • Partnership with the Government of Uttar Pradesh.

Cultural Significance:

  • Traces back to the 15th century when King Parakrama Pandya journeyed to Kashi to bring a lingam for a temple in Madurai.
  • Lingam installation in Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu, based on the Lord’s wish.
  • Kasi Viswanathar Temple in Tenkasi built by the Pandyas for devotees who couldn’t visit Kashi.

Alignment with NEP, 2020:

  • In accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP), 2020, emphasizing the integration of Indian Knowledge Systems with modern knowledge systems.
