Why in the news?

  • Karnataka Formation Day, observed on November 1st each year, commemorates the day when the state of Karnataka came into existence.
  • Karnataka Formation Day is commemorated as “Karnataka Rajyotsava.”
  • It holds great significance in the history and culture of Karnataka.

Historical Significance

  • Karnataka achieved its goal with the formation of the Mysore State on November 1, 1956, which brought together Kannada-speaking areas from Bombay, Madras, and Hyderabad.
  • This was made possible with the passage of the States Reorganisation Act,1956.
  • On November 1, 1973, the state was officially renamed Karnataka from Mysore.
  • This date marks the reorganization of states in India on linguistic lines.

Cultural Heritage

  • Karnataka boasts a vibrant cultural heritage, with classical dance forms like Carnatic music originating from this state.
  • The Mysuru Style of Bharatanatyam, made famous by JattiTayamma, holds a dominant position in the state.

Dance – Yakshagana

  • Yakshagana lacks a written script and depends entirely on the artist’s ability to be spontaneous, to improvise, to be a good orator and have a sound knowledge of the plot and character.
  • The art form is 500 years old, and the entire portrayal takes place in refined Kannada, without even a word of any other language.

Kambala

  • Karnataka’s Buffalo race is called Kambala.
  • The annual buffalo race, a two-day festival, is an integral part of the rural community and is considered a sport as well as a tradition.

Tourist Attractions

  • The state is renowned for its historical monuments, including the exquisite temples of Hampi, the palaces in Mysore, and the natural beauty of Coorg and Western Ghats.

  • The latest product of Karnataka which received GI tag was Gulbarga Tur Dal.
