Junior Men’s World Cup in Malaysis
News:
- India will open their campaign in the FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup 2023 against South Korea today in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
- Thirteen teams, evenly split into four groups, will compete for the top two spots in their respective groups in the 13th Junior Men’s Hockey World Cup.
- The 12-day celebration will come to an end on December 16.

- The history of hockey dates back many centuries. Historical accounts state that a prehistoric version of the game was played in Iran approximately 2,000 BC, Ethiopia approximately 1,000 BC, and Egypt approximately 4,500 BC;
- The development of public institutions such as Eton is partly responsible for the emergence of the modern game of hockey in England in the mid-18th century.
- The first Hockey Association was formed in the United Kingdom in 1876, and it created the first official set of rules.
- The first men’s Olympic hockey competition was held in London in 1908, with separate competitions for England, Wales, Ireland, and Scotland. With the addition of France and Germany, the competition consisted of six teams.
- Hockey and India:
- Sometime between the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the British came up with the first version of field hockey as we know it today. It began as a popular school game and eventually made its way to the Indian army during British rule in the 1850s.
- In 1855, the first hockey club in India was established in what is now Kolkata, then known as Calcutta.
- The Dhyan Chand Award, India’s highest accolade for lifetime achievement in sports, has been given to athletes each year since 2002 who have made contributions to the sport both during and after their playing careers.
- Major Dhyan Chand was an Indian field hockey player who played from August 29, 1905, to December 3, 1979. He is considered as one of the sport’s all-time greats.
