Jammu & Kashmir Votes in Phase-I of Assembly Elections
Why in the news?
Jammu & Kashmir held the first phase of its assembly elections with a peaceful voter turnout of 58.85% across seven districts. Authorities seized over Rs. 124 crore to ensure fair elections.
Highlights of the Enthusiastic Voting and Peaceful Polls:
- Voting in Phase-I recorded a turnout of 58.85% by 7:30 PM across 24 assembly constituencies in seven districts.
- Polling was peaceful, with no reported incidents, showcasing citizens’ commitment to democracy.
- Voters from all sections of society, including women and youth, participated enthusiastically, with long queues observed at polling stations.
Polling Stations and Inclusivity Efforts
- 3,276 polling stations were established across Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam, Kishtwar, Anantnag, Ramban, and Doda districts.
- Kashmiri migrants could vote through special polling stations, while home-voting facilities were provided for senior citizens and people with disabilities (PwDs).
What is Delimitation ?
- Delimitation Definition: Delimitation refers to the process of defining the boundaries of territorial constituencies in a country or province with a legislative body.
- Delimitation Commission Act: Enacted in 1952.
- Appointed By: The Delimitation Commission is appointed by the President of India and collaborates with the Election Commission of India (ECI).
- Delimitation Instances: Delimitation Commissions were set up in 1952, 1963, 1973, and 2002 under respective Acts.
- First Exercise: Conducted in 1950-51 by the President with help from the Election Commission.
