About the Government Action:
The Union government has initiated an investigation into organ transplants involving foreign nationals in India.
Concerned about the rising number of such transplants, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has directed States and Union Territories to closely monitor these procedures.
Hospitals found violating regulations will face consequences as authorities aim to curb potential commercial dealings in organ transplants.
What is the National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) ?
NOTTO is a national organisation under the Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
Established as per the Transplantation of Human Organs (Amendment) Act 2011.
Its National Network division acts as the apex centre for coordinating and networking nationwide activities related to organ and tissue procurement and distribution.
About THOT Rules, 2014:
Authorisation Committee: Rule 7 of the 2014 Rules outlines the formation and duties of the Authorisation Committee.
Commercial Transactions: Rule 7(3) mandates the Committee to verify absence of commercial transactions when donor and recipient aren’t close relatives.
Expedited Evaluation: Rule 7(5) permits approaching hospitals for urgent evaluation if a recipient urgently needs transplantation within a week.
