About Proposed Highway Tolling System:

  • The new tolling system is based on the global navigation satellite system, utilising the Indian GAGAN navigation system.
  • It involves fitting vehicles with an On-Board Unit (OBU) to track their location accurately within a 10-meter range.
  • Toll rates are calculated based on the distance traveled by the vehicle, with the toll amount deducted from a linked digital wallet.
What is FAST Tags?

●   Introduced in 2017 for electronic toll collection.

●   Allows automatic deduction of toll without stopping.

●   Operated by NHAI under MoRTH supervision.

●   Uses RFID technology.

●   Linked to prepaid account.

●   Faced issues like technical glitches and double deductions.
