“INNOVATIVE STRONG HYBRIDS: BRIDGING TO FULL ELECTRIFICATION WITHOUT RANGE ANXIETY”
Why in the news?
- Strong hybrids praised for cutting emissions, improving fuel efficiency without range anxiety of EVs.
- Onboard computer optimizes both drive trains in strong hybrids, offering an intermediate pathway to full electrification.

About Hybrid Vehicle:
- Combine Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) with Electric Propulsion system.
- Decarbonization Role: Hybrids have lower total carbon emissions (well-to-wheel) compared to electric and traditional ICE vehicles.
- Emissions Comparison: Hybrids emit 133 g/km of CO2, 16% less than EVs (158 g/km).
Types:
- Parallel hybrids (both engine and electric motor power independently),
- Series hybrids (only electric motor drives wheels, engine generates electricity).
About Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles in India Phase II:
Implementing Agency: Department of Heavy Industry, Ministry of Heavy Industry and Public Enterprises.
Objective: Promote faster adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles, establish charging infrastructure.
Features:
Focus on electrification of public transportation and shared transport.
Demand incentives for electric buses through State/city transport corporations (STUs).
