INDIGENOUS CONVENTIONAL SUBMARINE UNDER PROJECT-76

Why in the news?

  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has started a preliminary study for designing and developing an indigenous conventional submarine under Project-76.
  • The study, approved by the Defence Ministry, is expected to take about a year. After completion, a formal proposal will be presented to the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) for approval.

About Project-76

  • Project-76 builds on the advanced technology vessel (ATV) project, including Arihant nuclear ballistic missile submarines (SSBN) and nuclear-powered submarine (SSN) projects.
  • Submarines will include indigenous weapons, missiles, systems, and more.
  • The Navy’s 30-year plan focuses on designing and building indigenous conventional submarines after P-75I.
  • DRDO’s AIP modules will enhance Scorpene-class submarines’ endurance and stealth from 2025.
