Why in the News?

The Indian Railways will participate in the Mission Amrit Sarovar initiative to construct and rejuvenate waterbodies near railway sites. This effort aims to combat water scarcity, improve groundwater levels, and enhance climate resilience through community-driven water conservation.

Indian Railways Joins Mission Amrit Sarovar for Water Conservation

Overview of Mission Amrit Sarovar:

  • Launched in April 2022, the mission aims to construct or rejuvenate 75 ponds per district across India.
  • As of October 2024, over 68,000 ponds have been completed, improving surface and groundwater
  • The initiative ensures sustainable water resources while addressing water scarcity.

Phase 2 and Railways’ Role:

  • Phase 2 focuses on community participation (Jan Bhagidari) to enhance climate resilience and ecological balance.
  • The Indian Railways has been tasked with desilting, excavating, and constructing new ponds near railway sites.
  • Railway authorities will collaborate with district administrations to identify suitable locations.
  • Excavated soil will be used in railway embankments, where suitable for construction.

Implementation and Coordination:

  • The Rural Development Ministry will oversee coordination with Railways.
  • The Union Government has informed State and UT Chief Secretaries about Railways’ involvement.
  • A significant number of ponds are expected to be completed by August 15, 2025.
