Indian Navy intercepts and rescues crew from hijacked Iranian vessel, thwarting piracy attempt in the Arabian Sea.
About the Indian Navy Foils Hijacking Attempt:
- Indian Navy ships Sumedha and Trishul intercept and liberate hijacked Iranian fishing vessel, Al-Kambar, from nine armed pirates.
- Crew of 23 Pakistani nationals rescued safely after intense coercive measures lasting over 12 hours.
- Navy specialists conducted thorough checks on Al-Kambar to ensure seaworthiness before escorting it to a secure location for resuming fishing activities.
About INS Sumedha:
● Third vessel of Saryu class NOPV, built by Goa Shipyard Limited. ● Commissioned on March 7, 2014, part of Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet in Visakhapatnam. ● Primary Functions: ● Conducts EEZ surveillance, anti-piracy patrols, fleet support, maritime security, and escort operations. ● Features: ● Equipped with advanced weapon and sensor systems, it can carry an Advanced Light Combat Helicopter. ● Propelled by two diesel engines, capable of reaching 25 knots, with a range of 6,000 nautical miles at 16 knots.
