Why in the News ?

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) will host the International Conference on Green Hydrogen 2025 in New Delhi on 11–12 November, aiming to promote collaboration, innovation, and investment in green hydrogen production, infrastructure, and technology localisation. This event aligns with India’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and explore sustainable energy solutions.

  • The International Conference on Green Hydrogen 2025 will bring together policymakers, researchers, and global stakeholders to discuss various aspects of green hydrogen, including its role in emissions trading systems and voluntary carbon markets.
  • It aims to disseminate knowledge on scaling up green hydrogen production and developing supporting infrastructure, while also addressing the environmental impact assessment of these processes.
  • Key objectives include building demand, encouraging global partnerships, and aligning industry-government priorities to support nationally determined contributions.
  • The event seeks to define practical pathways for implementing India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) and exploring its potential in carbon offset projects.

About Green Hydrogen and India’s Mission:
● Green Hydrogen is produced through the electrolysis of water using renewable energy sources like solar or wind power, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
● India launched the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) in January 2023, targeting 5 MMT (million metric tonnes) of annual green hydrogen production by 2030.
● The mission aims to make India a global hub for the production and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives, potentially contributing to the voluntary carbon market.
● It supports energy security, decarbonisation, and job creation while reducing dependence on fossil fuels and aligning with India’s nationally determined contributions.
● The 2025 Conference reinforces India’s vision of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070 through clean energy transitions and exploring innovative carbon offset projects.
