INDIA SELECTS CREW FOR AXIOM-4 MISSION TO ISS

Why in the news?

  • Shubhanshu Shukla and PrasanthBalakrishnan Nair have been chosen as prime and back-up pilots for the Axiom-4 mission, respectively. They will undergo training in the U.S. starting August.
  • This mission marks the fourth private astronaut trip to the ISS and aligns with the India-U.S. joint vision to enhance space cooperation.

Mission Details:

  • The Human Space Flight Centre (HSFC) of ISRO has signed an agreement with Axiom Space Inc. for this mission, which includes scientific research and technology demonstrations.
  • The crew’s experience will contribute to India’s Human Space Program and bolster ISRO-NASA cooperation.

Crew Profiles:

  • Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla: An experienced fighter combat leader and test pilot with around 2,000 flying hours. He has piloted various aircraft, including Su-30 MKI and MiG-29.
  • Group Captain PrasanthBalakrishnan Nair: A skilled test pilot with approximately 3,000 flying hours, and has flown diverse aircraft. He also holds prestigious positions in military training.

About Axiom-4 Mission

  • Overview: Axiom-4 (Ax-4) is a private spaceflight to the International Space Station, operated by Axiom Space using a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft.
