About India Rises to Third Position in Solar Power Production:
- In 2023, India surpassed Japan to become the world’s third-largest producer of solar power, according to a report by Ember.
- India generated 113 billion units (BU) of solar power, exceeding Japan’s production of 110 BU.
- Despite ranking fifth globally in installed power capacity (73 gigawatt), India’s actual solar power production remains lower than expected due to fluctuations in power demand and local circumstances.
- NITI Ayog data reveals that although solar power constitutes 18% of India’s installed electricity capacity, it contributes only 6.66% to actual power production, highlighting a significant gap.
Key Initiatives in Solar Power:
Solar Park Scheme: Aims to develop multiple solar parks with around 500 MW capacity each across various states. Rooftop Solar Scheme: Focuses on installing solar panels on rooftops to harness solar power in residential buildings. National Solar Mission: Government initiative promoting sustainable growth and addressing energy security through solar power development. Sustainable rooftop implementation of Solar transfiguration of India (SRISTI) scheme: Aims to promote rooftop solar projects for sustainable energy generation in India. International Solar Alliance: Collaborative platform driving increased deployment of solar energy technologies globally. Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM)Scheme: Supports installation of off-grid solar pumps in rural areas to reduce grid dependency and promote solar energy adoption. |
