India Procures Nag Missile System to Strengthen Defence
Why in the News ?
The Ministry of Defence signed a ₹2,500 crore contract for the Nag Missile System (NAMIS) and 5,000 light vehicles to enhance military capabilities, promote indigenization, and generate employment, aligning with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
Procurement Overview:
- The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a ₹2,500 crore contract for procuring the Nag Missile System (NAMIS) and 5,000 light vehicles.
- Contracts were signed with Armoured Vehicle Nigam Limited for NAMIS (Tracked Version) and Force Motors Ltd & Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd for light vehicles.
- The procurement, under the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured) category, was inked in New Delhi on March 27, 2025, in the presence of Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh.
Nag Missile System (NAMIS):
- The NAMIS (Tracked Version), developed by Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDO), costs ₹1,801.34 crore.
- It is a fire-and-forget anti-tank weapon system designed to enhance the Indian Army’s mechanized infantry capabilities.
- Equipped with advanced sighting systems, NAMIS offers high firepower, lethality, and operational advantage against enemy armor.
- The system significantly strengthens anti-tank warfare and supports varied military operations.
Procurement of Light Vehicles & Impact:
- 5,000 modern light vehicles are designed with enhanced engine power and can carry a payload of 800 kg across diverse terrains.
- Both procurements aim to modernize defence infrastructure and strengthen indigenous industries under Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
- The projects are expected to generate direct and indirect employment by encouraging MSMEs in manufacturing components.
- These contracts mark a major step towards self-reliance in defence manufacturing and boosting the combat readiness of the armed forces.
