India – Nepal relations

  • Nepal is a significant neighbor of India and holds a unique place in its foreign policy because of the centuries-old geographic, historical, cultural, and economic ties.
  • Hinduism and Buddhism are closely related in India and Nepal, as Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha, is situated in modern-day Nepal.
  • In addition to having an open border and unrestricted travel, the two nations are also closely linked by marriage and family ties, a phenomenon known as Roti-Beti ka Rishta.
  • The cornerstone of the unique relationship between India and Nepal is the 1950 Treaty of Peace and Friendship between the two countries (post-independence).
  • Nepal is bordered by West Bengal, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar in India and therefore, a crucial aspect of cultural and economic interchange.
  • There are two ways to approach the analysis of the significance for India:
  • Their strategic significance for the security of India and their position in the perception of India’s role in world politics.
  • Located precisely in the center of India’s “Himalayan frontiers,” Nepal, along with Bhutan, serves as a northern “borderland” flank and a buffer state in case China decides to invade.
  • Both ecologically and hydropower-wise, rivers that originate in Nepal supply the perennial river systems of India.
  • Since Nepal is home to numerous Buddhist and Hindu holy sites, it is a popular destination for Indian pilgrims.
