  • The Prime Minister highlighted India’s historic energy investment and that said In order to guarantee affordable energy throughout the nation, India is investing in energy in a huge quantity;
  • PM also emphasized how, despite being the most populous nation in the world, India has managed to maintain an astounding low carbon emission rate of just 4%.

India Energy Week (IEW) 2024

  • About:
    • India’s ongoing efforts to lessen its carbon footprint and make the transition to a greener future are in line with the goals of the India Energy Week 2024;
    • The occasion reflects India’s dedication to tackling important issues in the energy sector by providing a forum for conversations on availability, sustainability, and energy security;
    • India Energy Week 2024 is set to become the country’s most prestigious energy exhibition and conference, drawing in over 35,000 attendees, 400 speakers, and over 4,000 delegates representing over 100 countries;
    • Policymakers, business executives, and energy enthusiasts come together at this event to exchange ideas, look for opportunities, and help to shape India’s energy future.
  • IEW conference:
    • It will include several strategic and technical sessions addressing subjects like biofuels’ future, technological advancements in clean transportation, and India’s strategy to become energy-independent by 2047;
    • The India Energy Week 2024 is a major forum for promoting innovation, teamwork, and advancement in the country’s energy sector as India advances toward a sustainable energy future.

Power Industries in India

  • About:
    • India has one of the world’s most diverse power industries and a variety of energy sources, including conventional sources like coal, lignite, natural gas, oil, hydropower, and nuclear power, as well as dependable non-conventional sources like wind, sun, agricultural waste, and household waste, are used to generate electricity. The country’s need for electricity has grown swiftly, and this trend is expected to continue in the years to come;
    • India is the only G20 country on track to meet the Paris Agreement’s goals;
  • Various Power Sources in India: India ranked third (upto January 31, 2023) in the world for both production and consumption of electricity, with an installed power capacity of 411.64 GW.
    • With 168.4 GW of installed renewable energy (including hydro) capacity, India accounted for 40.9% of the country’s total installed power capacity;
    • The estimated contribution of solar energy is 63.3 GW, with wind power coming in second at 41.9 GW, biomass at 10.2 GW, small hydropower at 4.92 GW, waste-to-energy at 0.52 GW, and hydropower at 46.85 GW;
    • With a total installed thermal capacity of 237.2 GW as of March 2023, coal accounts for 57.7% of India’s thermal power output, with the remaining percentage coming from gas, diesel, and lignite.
  • Various Goernment initiatives and aspirations:
    • India intends to install 500 GW of non-fossil electricity by 2030, making non-fossil cleaner fuels 50% of the installed capacity mix. This is part of the country’s ambitious energy transition plans;
    • In India, 100% FDI is permitted in the power sector for power trading via the automatic route, transmission and distribution of electricity, and generation from all sources (apart from atomic energy);
    • The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) projects that India’s electricity consumption will rise to 817 GW by 2030;
    • By 2029–2030, the CEA projects that the share of thermal energy generation will decrease from 78% to 52%, while the percentage of renewable energy generation will increase from 18% to 44%.
