INDIA ABSTAINS FROM ENDORSING UKRAINE PEACE SUMMIT'S FINAL STATEMENT

Why in the news?

India did not endorse the final statement of the Peace Summit in Switzerland.
It emphasized that only proposals acceptable to both Russia and Ukraine can lead to lasting peace.
India was among seven countries refusing to sign the “Joint Communique on a Peace Framework.

About the Objectives of the Switzerland-led Peace Conference:

Develop a roadmap for a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in Ukraine.
Address humanitarian issues: food security, freedom of navigation, nuclear safety.
Mitigate risks from the conflict, including isolating Russia economically and politically.
Engage global stakeholders, particularly from the Global South.

India’s Involvement:

Significant due to its strategic partnership with Russia, leadership in BRICS and SCO, and role in the Global South.
Swiss and Ukrainian officials prioritize India’s participation.

Participants and Absence:

50 out of 160 invited countries confirmed attendance: EU nations, NATO members, G-7, U.S. allies.
Brazil and South Africa declined; Russia was not invited.
