Human Rights Day Celebration – Special Lecture by Karnataka’s Lokayukta Hon’ble Justice Mr. B S Patil

Karnataka’s Lokayukta Hon’ble Justice Mr. B S Patil visited Universal Group of Institutions on 17th December 2022 at 04.00 p.m. for a special lecture on “The Impact of Corruption on Specific Huma Rights”, organized by Human Rights Cell in celebration of International Huma Rights Day. It was an inordinately enlightening interaction between the students and the revered Honourable Lokayukta..

Shri. R Upendra Shetty, the Chairman of the institution was additionally present, overseeing the event and guiding the students during it. There were many questions that were asked during this edifying and technical verbalization by our Honourable Lokayukta.

Students from all courses participated in the programme and the event began with the prayer song and lighting of the lamp. Ms Monica, Faculty of English welcomed the gathering.

Hon’ble Justice Mr. B S Patil opened his speech with motivating thoughts stating “The present is given by future; and we live by the dream of tomorrow”. Speaking about the topic of the day, Justice Patil highlighted that Corruption is retarding our development as Cancer and it can be eradicated with the co-operation of all stakeholders.

Speaking on the impact of corruption on rights, Justice B S Patil quoted the instance of misuse of MGNREGA scheme. MGNREGA, Sir recalled it to be an exceptional social security law and scheme, but unfortunately corruption in implementing this scheme directly affected Right to Life, Right to Clean environment and stunts sustainability and development of the nation.

Justice Patil also elaborated on how the office of Lokayukta functions, including lodging of complaint by common man to suo-moto cases registrations.

Judge in his concluding remarks, stressed for striving for Excellence by everyone, whoever he is or whatever he is pursuing. Sir quoted that Citizens of this country have a fundamental duty to strive for excellence and quoted Article 51(A)(j) “to strive towards excellence in all spheres of individual and collective activity so that the nation constantly rises to higher levels of endeavour and achievement.”

Post his lecture, Hon’ble Lokayukta answered few questions and interacted with the students, on issues of Transparency in Judicial Appointments, Elimination of Corruption in the mind, Instances of Lake encroachments in Bangalore, Supreme Court’s actions on corrupt practices, the idea of an honest officer, pending court cases reality and more.

For the questions posed by the students to the Lokayukta, Sir answered eloquently and all the students, faculties and Management enjoyed the company of one of the legal luminaries of the country. We at Universal Group of Institutions were indeed lucky to be visited and have interacted by such an eminent personality.
