Why in the News?
- 78 Opposition MPs suspended – 33 from Lok Sabha, 45 from Rajya Sabha marking an unprecedented trend.
About the Suspension:
- Large number of MPs were suspended for disrupting Parliament after last week’s security breach.
- Demanded a statement from the Home Minister in Lok Sabha which led to disruptions.
- Opposition leaders criticize the government’s handling, calling it “murder of democracy.”
Process and Duration of Suspensions:
- Presiding Officers (Speaker in LS, Chairman in RS) play a crucial role.
- MPs directed to withdraw are named and then suspension motion is moved by the House.
- Suspension can last until the end of the session, with a maximum duration of five days for severe misconduct.
- Lok Sabha introduced a rule in 2001 allowing automatic suspension for five days without a motion, not adopted by Rajya Sabha.
