HIGH INFORMAL SECTOR ENTERPRISE SHARE IN KEY STATES

Why in the news?

  • The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) released the Annual Survey of Unincorporated Enterprises ( ASUSE) for 2022-23.
  • Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Maharashtra had the highest share of informal sector enterprises in both rural and urban areas

Key Findings of the Survey:

  • The survey highlighted the employment capacity of the informal sector, with over 10.96 crore workers employed in 2022-23.
  • Urban workers numbered 5.72 crore, while rural workers stood at 5.24 crore.
  • In comparison, 9.79 crore workers were employed in 2021-22, with 5.03 crore in urban areas and 4.76 crore in rural areas.

What is an Incorporated Entity?

An incorporated entity, such as a limited liability partnership, joint venture, or wholly-owned subsidiary, is a separate legal entity with a more structured setup compared to unincorporated enterprises.

Annual Survey of Unincorporated Enterprises (ASUSE) provides comprehensive data on unincorporated non-agricultural enterprises.

Basis and Publication

Conceptualized by NSSO, published by National Statistics Office, MoSPI.

Conducted annually since 2019-20; previously every five years.

Objective

Provides data on economic and operational characteristics of enterprises in manufacturing, trade, and other services (excluding construction).

Geographical Coverage

Encompasses rural and urban areas across India, excluding inaccessible villages in Andaman and Nicobar Islands
