Heliopolis Memorial: PM Of India Visit

News: At the Heliopolis (Port Tewfik) Memorial in the Heliopolis War Cemetery in Cairo, Egypt, the Prime Minister of India will pay his tributes.

The bigger Heliopolis Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery includes the Heliopolis Memorial.

3,727 Indian troops who lost their lives fighting in the First World War campaigns in Egypt and Palestine are honoured by this memorial.

The original Port Tewfik memorial, which was located at the Suez Canal’s entrance, was dedicated in 1926.

In 1980, a replacement memorial was built in the Heliopolis Commonwealth War Grave Cemetery after the first monument was damaged by Egyptian soldiers fleeing during the Israeli-Egyptian War of 1967.

In Palestine, where Indian cavalry took part in the Battle of Haifa, as well as in Mesopotamia during the First World War, Indian forces were crucial in defending the Suez Canal.

The current name of Port Tewfik is Port Suez.

Egypt’s northern Gulf of Suez shoreline is where Port Suez is situated.

The Suez Canal, which runs north-south across Egypt from the Mediterranean Sea to the Gulf of Suez, comes to an end at the port and city that serve as its southern terminus.

General cargo, oil tanker, and both commercial and private passenger vessels are all served by the port.
