● Established in 1875, IMD serves as India’s National Meteorological Service. ● It operates under the Ministry of Earth Sciences of the Government of India. ● Headquartered in New Delhi, it’s a key agency in meteorology and allied subjects. ● IMD is also recognized as one of the World Meteorological Organization’s six Regional Specialized Meteorological Centres. What are Heat Waves? ● Heat waves are extended durations of extremely hot weather with adverse effects on health, environment, and economy. ● India’s tropical climate makes it susceptible to frequent and severe heat waves. ● IMD defines a heat wave if maximum temperatures reach 40°C or above for Plains and 30°C or above for Hilly regions. |
