  • Guru Purnima is celebrated on the full moon (Purnima) of the Ashadha month in the Hindu lunar calendar.
  • The festival is dedicated to teachers (Gurus), spiritual mentors, and scholars, acknowledging their contribution to shaping individuals and society.
  • Devotees express gratitude, seek blessings, and honour their teachers through prayers, cultural programmes, and spiritual discourses.

Historical and Religious Importance

  • Guru Purnima is also known as Vyasa Purnima as it commemorates the birth anniversary of Maharishi Ved Vyasa, regarded as one of India’s greatest sages.
  • Ved Vyasa is traditionally credited with compiling the Vedas, authoring the Mahabharata, and composing the Brahma Sutras and several Puranas.
  • The day also holds immense significance in Buddhism, as Lord Buddha is believed to have delivered his first sermon at Sarnath after attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya.
  • Buddha’s first discourse, known as the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta (Setting in Motion the Wheel of Dharma), marked the beginning of the spread of Buddhism.
  • The occasion is observed by Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains, reflecting India’s rich spiritual diversity and shared reverence for teachers and wisdom.

About Guru-Shishya Tradition :

●      The Guru-Shishya Parampara is one of the oldest educational traditions in India, based on the close relationship between a Guru and disciple (Shishya).

●      Ancient centres of learning such as Takshashila, Nalanda, Vikramashila, and Vallabhi followed this system of holistic education.

●      Maharishi Ved Vyasa is revered as the Adi Guru for preserving and systematizing India’s ancient knowledge through the compilation of the Vedas and the composition of the Mahabharata.

●      Sarnath, located near Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), is one of the four major Buddhist pilgrimage sites, where Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon and established the Sangha.

●      The values of the Guru-Shishya tradition are reflected in Article 51A(h) of the Indian Constitution, which encourages the development of the scientific temper, humanism, and the spirit of inquiry and reform through education.

●      The tradition continues to influence India’s education system, classical arts, spiritual institutions, and cultural practices.
