About Government Spending on Border Roads:

  • The government plans to allocate over ₹2 crore per kilometre for constructing roads along the China border in Uttarakhand and Sikkim under the Vibrant Village Programme (VVP).
  • In the last five months, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has approved 113 roads in Arunachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Sikkim to enhance connectivity along the border areas.
  • The lack of road connectivity affects around 168 villages along the China .
About the Vibrant Village Programme:

  • The Vibrant Village Programme was introduced in the Finance Minister’s Budget Speech 2022.
  • Centrally sponsored scheme announced in Union Budget 2022-23 for villages on the northern border.
  • Aims to enhance quality of life in identified border villages in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and Ladakh.
  • It covers 2,967 villages in 46 blocks of 19 districts, focusing on Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Ladakh.

Objectives:

  • Establish growth centres using ‘hub and spoke model’ to promote social entrepreneurship.
  • Empower youth and women through skill development and entrepreneurship.
  • Harness tourism potential by promoting local culture and traditions.
