Govt of India has proposed several infrastructural projects in order to develop Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Briefly explain the importance of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, significance of the undertaken projects and issues that may arise.
Introduction:
Andaman & Nicobar is an archipelago on the eastern side of India. It is situated in Bay of Bengal. It is a union territory of India. There are around 300 islands in this region. The total land area is 8073 sq. km. Indigenous tribes have inhabited some of the Islands many of which are prohibited for visitors.

The major significant features of the region are:
- Abundant natural resources: Andaman & Nicobar is known for its natural resources with diverse flora and
- Beautiful eco-tourism destination: It has beaches, waterfalls and islands which attract The major attractions for tourists are Cellular Jail, Baratang, Barren Islands, Havelock Island, Coral Islands.
- Absence of large scale industry: There is not even a single large scale industry in the Some small scale industry related to shell and wood works are present.
- Presence of indigenous tribes: Tribes like Onge, Jarvas are still present
- Fishing: It is the main source of income other than the tourism
The new infrastructural projects are being undertaken considering the following:
- The location of A&N is strategically advantageous for India to defend its stakes in Indian Ocean Region and counter the Chinese
- Improving the tourism will increase the economic value of the region.
- It acts as a buffer zone because it extends India’s presence in the Indian Ocean Region. Although it belongs to India, it is just 22 nautical miles away from
Conclusion:
There are some sensitive issues in developing the Andaman & Nicobar such as threat to ecology, endemic species, de-notification of areas belonging to local tribes. The government needs to setup suitable committees so that there is minimal conflict. The suggestions of such committees should also be implemented in its fullest form by the government.
