Why in the news?

AFSPA extension in parts of Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh for six months, aiming to maintain security and combat insurgency.

About the Extension Details:

  • The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) prolonged the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in parts of Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh for six months.
  • In Nagaland, AFSPA is extended across eight districts and 21 police stations, effective from April 1 unless withdrawn earlier.
  • In Arunachal Pradesh, AFSPA continues in three districts and areas under three police stations in Namsai district.

What is The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) ?

●   The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) originated from the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Bill, passed in 1958.

●   Enacted due to escalating violence in Northeastern states.

●   Empowers armed forces to maintain public order in “disturbed areas.”

●   Grants authority to disperse gatherings, use force, and make arrests without warrants.

●   Allows entry, search, and seizure without warrants and bans possession of firearms.
