GLOBAL MEET URGES INDIA TO AUGMENT PULSES PRODUCTION TO MEET NUTRITIONAL NEEDS

Highlights of The Global Pulses Conference:

  • Ministers Munda and Goyal highlight a 60% increase in pulse production from 2014 to 2024.
  • Emphasis on partnership between NAFED and GPC to address global dietary needs.
  • Measures include ensuring attractive returns on investment through Minimum Support Price and aiming for self-sufficiency in pulse crops by 2027.

India’s Pulses Production:

●   India leads in pulses production, accounting for 25% of global output, consumption (27%), and imports (14%).

●   Major pulses-producing states include Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Karnataka.

●   Both Kharif and Rabi seasons contribute to pulse cultivation, with Rabi pulses comprising over 60% of total production.

World Pulses Day:

Designated by the UN General Assembly on 10th February to acknowledge the significance of pulse crops like chickpeas, dry beans, and lentils globally.
