Why in the news?

  • General Upendra Dwivedi became the 30th Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) on Sunday, succeeding General Manoj Pande.
  • The transition also led to several other senior appointments, including the new Vice-Chief of the Army Staff and several Army Commanders.

  • The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) is the highest-ranking officer in the Indian Army and its head.
  • Acts as the principal advisor to the Defence Ministry on army-related matters and the key military advisor to the President of India.
Historical Evolution of the Title

  • During India’s independence, the head of the Indian Army was titled “Commander-in-Chief, Indian Army.”
  • On March 1, 1948, the title changed to “Chief of the Army Staff and Commander-in-Chief, Indian Army.”
  • The Commanders-in-Chief (Change in Designation) Act of 1955 shortened the title to “Chief of Army Staff.”
