Fourth Khelo India Winter Games

  • The fourth Khelo India Winter Games will begin on 2nd February, 2024 in Leh, Ladakh.

News Elaboration

  • The five-day event in Leh will be inaugurated by Union Minister Nisith Pramanik and the Union Territories of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir are co-hosting this edition, which is divided into two sections. The Ladakh in Leh is hosting the first segment of this edition;
  • In this first phase of the Khelo India Winter Games, six hundred athletes representing fifteen States and Union Territories are competing in two sports: ice hockey and ice speed skating;
  • There are eight men’s teams competing in ice hockey and four women’s teams. The second phase of the match is slated to take place in Kashmir Valley from April 21 to April 25;
  • Its mascot is the snow leopard, known as ‘Sheen-e She’ (Shan) in the Ladakh region.

Regarding the 2024 Khélo India Winter Games

  • The fourth iteration of the yearly competition in the Khelo India calendar is the Khelo India Winter Games 2024;
  • Along with the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir, which has been organizing the Games since 2020, the Union Territory of Ladakh is hosting the event for the first time this year;
  • The first round of the Games will take place in Leh from February 2–6. The dates for the Games’ relocation to Gulmarg are February 21–25;
  • Ladakh will host ice hockey and speed skating, while Jammu and Kashmir will host ski mountaineering, snowboarding, Nordic skiing, alpine skiing, and gandola;
  • The Khelo India Winter Games are a component of the Khelo India Mission and the goal is to elevate all Olympic sports and create a pipeline of gifted athletes who can represent India at the greatest levels of competition.

About ‘Khelo India’ Program

  • Reason For Such Program: To encourage mass participation in sports and ensure effective implementation, the existing Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan (RGKA), Urban Sports Infrastructure Scheme (USIS), and National Sports Talent Search Scheme (NSTSS) were proposed to be merged into a single scheme called “Khelo India: National Programme for Sports Development.”
  • About the Khelo India:
    • The Khello India initiative was started in 2017–18 with the goal of creating sports facilities all over India and providing a platform for local athletes;
    • The Khelo India Scheme is the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports’ flagship Central Sector Scheme;
    • To accomplish the dual goals of encouraging widespread participation and elevating sportsmanship, the government has had extended the “Khelo India – National Programme for Development of Sports” over the 15th Finance Commission Cycle (2021–22–2025-26);
    • Competitions in Khelo India: Under this movement, the Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG), Khelo India University Games (KIUG), and Khelo India Winter Games were established as annual national sports competitions in which young people representing their states and universities competed for medals;
    • Khelo India Winter Games have been added to the ‘Sports Competitions and Talent Development’ component;
    • NOTE: Khelo India includes five components: creating and upgrading sports infrastructure; Sports Competitions and Talent Development; Khelo India Centres and Sport Academies; Fit India Movement; Sports promote inclusivity.
