Foot Rot Disease:
News: Many farmers expressed concern about the “foot rot” illness in the Basmati variety of paddy saplings in the nurseries.
Bakanae Disease is another name for foot rot.
Only the Basmati kind of paddy is affected by this lethal fungus, which is spread by soil and seeds.
‘Fusarium verticillioides’ fungi are the culprits.
The infected saplings swell and turn a pale yellow colour. Later, the saplings start to dry out and typically die.
After transplantation, symptoms might sometimes occur, and the infected plants initially grow much taller than the healthy ones before passing away a few days later.
India is well-known for its basmati rice, with the products from seven States designated for Geographical Indication: Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
