FCRA REGISTRATIONS CANCELLATION

Why in the News?

  • The FCRA registrations of prominent NGOs, Centre for Policy Research (CPR) and World Vision India (WVI), were cancelled this month.
  • Due to the pandemic and 2020 FCRA amendments, NGOs had renewal relief until March 31, 2024.

About  Foreign Contribution Regulation Act  (FCRA) and Regulations:

  • FCRA, enacted in 1976 during the Emergency, aims to regulate foreign donations to prevent interference by foreign powers.

  • FCRA mandates registration, a dedicated bank account, and purpose-specific fund utilization.
  • The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) monitors FCRA implementation and renewal processes.
  • Mandatory registration under FCRA is required for NGOs receiving foreign contributions for various programs.
  • Registration is valid for five years and must be renewed.
