Why in the news?

  • The Ernakulam Rural police formed a special investigation team (SIT) to probe an international organ trade racket.
  • SabithNasar, suspected of recruiting organ donors, was arrested and remanded in judicial custody for 14 days.

About IPC Section 370: Trafficking of Persons:

  • Trafficking involves recruiting, transporting, harboring, transferring, or receiving individuals through threats, force, coercion, abduction, fraud, inducement, or abuse of power for exploitation.
  • General Punishment:Imprisonment: 7 years to life. Fine: Applicable.
  • Public Servants or Police Officers:Involvement in trafficking: Life imprisonment. Fine: Applicable.
  • Trafficking of Minors:Minimum imprisonment: 10 years to life.Fine: Applicable.
  • Trafficking of Multiple Individuals:Rigorous imprisonment: Minimum 10 years to life.Fine: Applicable.
