Why in the News?
- The Union government establishes a committee to assess equitable distribution of benefits among over 1,200 Scheduled Castes (SCs).
- The move follows the Prime Minister’s promise to address sub-categorization demands raised by the Madiga community in Telangana.

About the Committee:
- Evaluate and work out methods for fair distribution of benefits, schemes, and initiatives to the most backward SC communities.
- Composed of Secretaries from key ministries, the committee will focus on ways to redirect government schemes and initiatives for more even distribution.
- Not tasked with breaking up the SC quota but will explore avenues to address grievances and present findings promptly.
About Madiga community
· Madiga, a Telugu caste, primarily resides in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka, with a minority presence in Tamil Nadu. · Historically linked to tannery, leatherwork, and handicrafts, Madigas are now predominantly engaged in agricultural labor. · Over time, their occupations have transitioned, reflecting changes in economic activities and livelihoods. |
