Earthquake in China

NEWS:

  • A 6.2-magnitude earthquake that struck an ethnic county in Gansu, northwest China, and the neighboring province of Qinghai on Monday at midnight claimed 111 lives, according to the local earthquake relief headquarters.
  • The shallow earthquake, which had a focal depth of 10 kilometers, shocked the area on Monday at 11:59 p.m., according to the China Earthquake Networks Centre.
  • According to experts, shallow earthquakes seriously harm infrastructure.
  • The Gansu township of Liugou is the epicenter of the earthquake.
  • Because of the shifting of continental plates, Qinghai province is close to the Tibet-Himalayan region, which is prone to frequent earthquakes.
  • Following the earthquake, Chinese President Xi Jinping directed intensive rescue operations to reduce the number of casualties.

●   Earthquakes are simply defined as shakings of the earth and it’s an organic occurrence. Energy releases cause waves to form that travel in all directions, which is what causes it.

●   An earthquake’s hypocenter is the point beneath the surface of the earth where it begins, and its epicenter is the spot directly above it.

●   The earthquakes are classified as shallow, intermediate, or deep based on their depth, which ranges from 0 to 700 km.:

○   The focal depth of shallow earthquakes is 0–70 km.

○   The focal depth of intermediate earthquakes is between 70 and 300 km deep.

○   The focal depth of deep earthquakes is between 300 and 700 km.
