DRDO Achieves Milestone with VSHORADS Flight Tests

Why in the news?

The Defence Research and Development Organisation successfully tested the 4th Generation VSHORADS, enhancing India’s air defense capabilities and showcasing indigenous technological advancements against aerial threats.

DRDO Achieves Milestone with VSHORADS Flight Tests

About Successful Flight Tests of VSHORADS:

  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted three flight tests of the 4th Generation Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) at Pokhran Field Firing Ranges in Rajasthan.
  • Tests were carried out against a high-speed target, demonstrating critical parameters such as maximum range and altitude interception.
  • Development trials confirmed the weapon system’s hit-to-kill capability in various target engagement scenarios, including approaching, receding, and crossing modes.

Indigenous Development

  • VSHORADS is a Man Portable Air Defence System developed indigenously by Research Centre Imarat (RCI) in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories and Development cum Production Partners.
  • The three Armed Services have been involved from the project’s inception and participated in the developmental trials, ensuring comprehensive evaluation.

Facts about Very Short-Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS):

  • Definition: Fourth-generation Man Portable Air Defence System (MANPAD) for countering low-altitude aerial threats over short distances.
  • Design: Developed indigenously by DRDO’s Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad, with collaboration from other DRDO labs and Indian industry.
  • Purpose: Provides short-range air defence to protect ground forces and critical assets from aerial threats like helicopters and low-flying aircraft.
  • Range: Capable of targeting threats up to 6 km.
  • Technologies: Features include Dual-band IIR Seeker, miniaturised Reaction Control System, and integrated avionics.
  • Propulsion: Uses a dual-thrust solid motor for effective launch.
  • Portability: Designed for easy transportation and quick deployment in challenging terrains.
