Discuss briefly about the Magnetic Resonance Imaging techniques and its areas of applications.

Introduction:

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a technique mostly used in medical field to obtain the images of anatomy and physiological processes of the body. It does not invlove ionoizing radiations or X-ray and hence preferred more than the Computer Tomography(CT).

A radiofrequency source under the influence of the magnetic field will be created. By picking up the signals a detailed image of the body will be prepared. Hydrogen protons in the body get aligned in same direction under magnetic field which is the principle of working of MRI scanners. Patients with metallic implants should not be undergoing MRI scans. Sufficient care should be taken since a large amount of magnetic field is involved.

Benefits:

  • Extensively used in medical field
  • 3 dimensional images can be obtained
  • Advanced brain studies and cognition related imaging can be achieved
  • Can be used to identify even small injuries
  • Can be used for child patients also

Conclusion:

Traditionally, it cannot be used to know the metabolic rates. Also, lot of MRI scanners are known for their characteristic sounds(click and beep) which needs to be taken care of with ear-protection equipments. Some adverse nerve stimulations are also caused in some patients. Thus sufficient care should be taken while using MRI although it is very beneficial.
