DESPITE NATURE’S FURY, HIMACHAL’S GDP TO SEE GROWTH AT 7.1% C

Why in the news?

Despite facing significant challenges due to a relentless monsoon in Himachal Pradesh during the fiscal year 2023-24, the state’s GDP is projected to grow at a commendable rate of 7.1%, showing resilience in the face of adversity.

About the Sustainable Energy Development in H.P:

  • Himachal Pradesh possesses significant hydroelectric potential, accounting for approximately 25% of the national potential.
  • With around 24,000 MW of hydroelectric power generation capacity, the state has harnessed 11,209 MW, highlighting its commitment to sustainable energy development and environmental conservation efforts.
About Hydroelectric Potential in India:

·    Hydropower Concentration: Predominantly located in India’s northern and north-eastern regions, particularly along the Indus, Ganges, and Brahmaputra river systems.

·    Untapped Potential: Arunachal Pradesh leads with 47 GW, followed by Uttarakhand at 12 GW, constituting significant untapped potential.

·    Global Ranking: India ranks fourth globally in undeveloped hydropower potential and fifth in total potential, trailing Russia, China, Canada, and Brazil.

·    Regional Distribution: Besides northern states, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, and Kerala also hold significant hydropower potential.
