  • Today marks the anniversary of Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel’s death, and the nation is honoring him.
  • Sardar Patel, affectionately referred to as “Iron Man of India,” united India with over 500 princely States.
  • In addition to holding the Home portfolio, he functioned as India’s first deputy prime minister.
  • In PM eulogy, he said that Sardar Patel’s visionary leadership and unwavering dedication to the country’s unity laid the groundwork for modern India. He went on to say that his excellent work serves as a blueprint for creating a stronger, more cohesive nation.

About Sardar Patel

  • Born: October 31, 1875, in Gujarat’s Nadiad; Death: 15 December, 1950.
  • India’s first deputy prime minister and home minister.
  • He headed a number of the Indian Constituent Assembly’s committees, including the Advisory Committee on Fundamental Rights; Committee on Tribal and Excluded Areas; Minorities; Committee on Provincial Constitutions.
  • In order to establish a superior India (Shresth Bharat), he consistently urged the people of India to live together by uniting (Ek Bharat). The Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which aims to make India self-reliant, continues to reflect this ideology.

Overhauls:

  • He made a significant effort to emancipate women from caste discrimination, alcoholism, and untouchability both inside and outside of Gujarat.
  • He integrated the national freedom movement with the farmer’s cause in the Kheda Satyagraha (1918) and Bardoli Satyagraha (1928).
  • Vallabhbhai Patel received the honor of being named “Sardar,” or “a Chief or a Leader,” from the women of Bardoli.
  • He is known as the ‘Patron Saint of India’s Civil Servants,’ having established the modern all-India services system.

Honours and accolades

  • 1991’s Bharat Ratna;
  • Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, or National Unity Day, was established by the Indian government in 2014 to honor Sardar Patel’s birth anniversary.
  • The Statue of Unity: In honor of Sardar Patel’s 143rd birthday, a statue honoring him was unveiled in Kevadia, Gujarat on October 31, 2018. Being the tallest statue in the world, this one is referred to as the Statue of Unity.
