About the Violation of Guidelines:

  • Despite severe floods in Delhi last year, Delhi Development Authority (DDA) continues construction on Yamuna floodplain, defying 2015 National Green Tribunal (NGT) guidelines.
  • NGT guidelines prohibit permanent constructions on the floodplain, which reduce water holding capacity and constrict river flow.
  • DDA’s “Restoration and Rejuvenation of River Yamuna Floodplains Project” includes permanent structures like concrete ghats and a cafe, flouting NGT directives.
About Yamuna River:

Origin:

  • Begins at Yamunotri Glacier in the Himalayas.

Course:

  • Flows 1,376 km through Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana.
  • Contributes to the Agra Canal near Delhi.
  • Joins Ganges near Prayagraj.

Tributaries:

  • Tons River near Dehradun.
  • Chambal River, largest right-bank tributary.
  • Hindon, Sarda, Giri (right), Betwa, Sindh (left).

About the National Green Tribunal Act 2010:

Establishment:

  • Established under the National Green Tribunal Act 2010.
  • Aims to address environmental disputes and ensure environmental protection.

Jurisdiction:

  • Principal Place of Sitting: New Delhi.
  • Other sitting places: Bhopal, Pune, Kolkata, and Chennai.

Mandate:

  • Required to finalise disposal of applications or appeals within 6 months of filing.
  • Focuses on resolving environmental issues and promoting sustainable development.
