Israel accuses Palestinian Islamist group Hamas of war crimes; Around one thousand people killed on both sides

News: Over a thousand Israelis have lost their lives in the ongoing war with Hamas, with 400 of the deaths occurring in Gaza and about 700 in Israel.

• It’s thought that thousands of people were hurt. Since fighting is still going on and certain regions have not yet been freed of Hamas terrorists, the death toll is anticipated to rise. At some sites, there is still fighting between Israeli security forces and Hamas.
• The Israeli military reported that it had struck over 800 targets in Gaza thus far, including airstrikes that completely destroyed the village of Beit Hanoun, which is located in the northeastern section of the territory.
• According to the UN, at least 70,000 Palestinians in Gaza are trying to find refuge at the schools it manages. In order to get food into Gaza, it called for the establishment of humanitarian corridors.

In Afghanistan earthquakes, death toll surpasses 2400 

News: With concerns that some individuals may be trapped under collapsed structures, search and rescue operations are ongoing, bringing the total number of fatalities from powerful earthquakes in Afghanistan to above 2,400. 

• Among the deadliest earthquakes to hit the nation in the previous 20 years was this one.  According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, 135 and at least 465 damaged and destroyed houses have been recorded.
• Saturday’s 6.3-magnitude earthquake occurred roughly 40 km away from the western city of Herat. A minimum of three strong aftershocks occurred, and numerous structures sustained damage that trapped individuals beneath the debris.
• Since Afghanistan is located close to the meeting point of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates, earthquakes frequently strike the country, particularly in the Hindu Kush mountain region. A 5.9-magnitude earthquake that struck the province of Paktika in June of last year claimed over 1,000 lives and left tens of thousands homeless.

2 killed, 2 missing after avalanche hits Tibet’s Mt. Shishapangma 

News: Tragedy struck Tibet’s Mount Shishapangma as a devastating avalanche claimed the lives of two climbers and left two others missing. The avalanche, which occurred in the high-altitude region of the mountain, has sent shockwaves through the mountaineering community and raised concerns about the inherent risks of tackling such challenging peaks.

• The victims have been identified as experienced climbers from different countries who were part of an international expedition attempting to conquer the 8,027-meter (26,335-foot) high mountain.
• The missing climbers are currently the focus of a frantic search and rescue operation, although the treacherous conditions and extreme altitude are complicating efforts.
