Yak churpi : GI Tag

  • Arunachali yaks are native to India, and their milk is used to make yak churpi.
  • It is raised by tribal yak pastoralists called Brokpas, who travel with their yaks to higher altitudes (10,000 feet and above) in the summer and lower altitudes in the winter to mountainous areas of moderate elevation.
  • The state’s Tawang and West Kameng regions are home to the majority of these amazing yaks.
  • Churpi is a high-protein dairy product that is naturally fermented.
  • For the indigenous populations that live in the chilly, mountainous parts of Arunachal Pradesh, it is a necessary food staple.
  • It is frequently eaten with rice and substituted for vegetables. It is also frequently added to meat and vegetable curries.
  • The conservation of yaks and the socioeconomic advancement of yak pastoralists will benefit from this GI tag.
  • Although yaks are raised at high altitudes in the Himalayan region, the Arunachali yak breed is distinct due to its size, weight, strain, and body shape.
  • The only yak breed that is officially recognised in India is the Arunachali.
