Biodiversity and Environment

A significant conservation initiative has been undertaken with the reintroduction of blackbuck in Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary, characterised by tropical dry deciduous teak and sal forests, is expected to benefit from enhanced ecosystem balance, restoration of native species, and strengthened biodiversity conservation.

Women Empowerment and Agriculture

Karnataka has emerged as the leading state in implementing the Namo Drone Didi Yojana, training women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) as drone pilots. The initiative promotes precision agriculture, improves rural livelihoods, and strengthens women’s participation in technology-driven sectors.

Social Justice and Demographic Concerns

The Jiyo Parsi Scheme, implemented by the Ministry of Minority Affairs, has gained attention following a registration drive that added approximately 300 participants. Launched in 2013–14, the scheme seeks to address the declining population of the Parsi community through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) support.

Global Economy

The Food and Agriculture Organization Food Price Index recorded an increase in March 2026. The rise is attributed to higher energy costs due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which have disrupted supply chains and increased global prices of cereals, edible oils, dairy products, meat, and sugar.

Science and Space

The Indian Space Research Organisation launched Mission MITRA in Leh at an altitude of approximately 3,500 metres. The mission aims to study astronaut behaviour under extreme environmental conditions, contributing to preparations for the Gaganyaan Programme.

Archaeological Discovery

A major palaeontological discovery has been reported from the Shivalik foothills near Dehradun, where freshwater fish fossils have been identified for the first time in the region. These fossils, dating to the Pliocene epoch (approximately 5 to 2.5 million years ago), provide important insights into the prehistoric ecosystem of northern India.

Maritime Significance

India observed National Maritime Day on April 5, commemorating the country’s maritime heritage and emphasising the importance of shipping in economic development and global connectivity. The occasion also recognises the contributions of seafarers and maritime institutions.

Defence and Technology

India has approved the induction of stealth Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAVs) under the Ghatak Programme, following clearance by the Defence Acquisition Council. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation, the UCAV—earlier known as AURA—features a flying-wing design for reduced radar visibility and is powered by the indigenous Kaveri engine, reflecting progress in defence indigenisation.
