1. UN Secretary-General to Attend the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi

UN Secretary-General António Guterres will participate in the 18th BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, on 12–13 September 2026. India is hosting the summit as BRICS Chair. His participation highlights growing cooperation between the United Nations and BRICS on global governance, sustainable development, peace, climate action and reform of multilateral institutions. The summit also strengthens India’s position as an important voice of the Global South and a bridge between developed and developing countries.

2. Government Tightens Sugar Stockholding Limit

The Union Government has reduced the stockholding limit for sugar dealers from 4,000 quintals to 2,000 quintals. The revised limit will take effect on 15 September and remain in force until 30 November 2026. Dealers cannot retain sugar for more than 30 days from the date of receipt. Kolkata and its extended metropolitan area retain a 4,000-quintal limit due to specific supply requirements. The measure seeks to curb hoarding and speculative trading, maintain adequate domestic supply and protect consumers during the festive season.

3. Apple and Google Maps Display ‘Lake America’ for U.S. Users

Apple Maps and Google Maps now display Lake Ontario as ‘Lake America’ for users in the United States following an executive order by U.S. President Donald Trump. Canada continues to recognise the internationally accepted name, Lake Ontario, while users outside the United States may see different labels depending on the platform. The dispute shows how digital mapping, official place names and geopolitical relations can intersect. It has also intensified debate over geographical naming authority and relations between the United States and Canada.

4. Shakti Sharma Becomes First Woman Non-Medical Air Vice Marshal

Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma has become the first woman officer from a non-medical branch of the Indian Defence Services to attain the rank of Air Vice Marshal or equivalent. Commissioned into the Indian Air Force’s Education Branch in 1994, she assumed charge as Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Education) on 1 September 2026. Her promotion marks a major milestone for women’s leadership in the armed forces and reflects their expanding role in command, training and institutional development.

5. BHASHINI Shilpi Session Promotes Language AI in Nepal

The Digital India BHASHINI Division organised a BHASHINI Shilpi developer session at the Embassy of India in Kathmandu on 31 August 2026. Developers, students, technologists and innovators explored BHASHINI APIs for translation, speech recognition, speech synthesis and multilingual digital services. The programme showcased India’s Digital Public Infrastructure approach and promoted India–Nepal collaboration in Language AI. It also demonstrated how inclusive technology can reduce linguistic barriers and improve access to digital public services across South Asia.

6. India and Denmark Deepen MSME and Innovation Cooperation

India and Denmark held the fourth meeting of their Joint Working Group on MSME development, innovation and intellectual property in Copenhagen from 24 to 28 August 2026. Discussions covered technology adoption, commercialisation, entrepreneurship, intellectual-property-led growth and stronger institutional cooperation. The engagement supports the India–Denmark Green Strategic Partnership and can help Indian micro, small and medium enterprises improve productivity, competitiveness and access to sustainable technologies.

7. Türkiye Becomes the 71st Signatory to the Artemis Accords

Türkiye became the 71st country to sign the Artemis Accords at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., on 31 August 2026. Established in 2020, the Accords set out principles for peaceful, transparent, safe and sustainable civil exploration of the Moon, Mars, asteroids and other celestial bodies. Their principles are rooted in the 1967 Outer Space Treaty and include transparency, interoperability, emergency assistance, registration of space objects, scientific data sharing and the responsible use of space resources.
