1. UN Secretary-General to Attend the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi
UN Secretary-General António Guterres will participate in the 18th BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, on 12–13 September 2026. India is hosting the summit as BRICS Chair. His participation highlights growing cooperation between the United Nations and BRICS on global governance, sustainable development, peace, climate action and reform of multilateral institutions. The summit also strengthens India’s position as an important voice of the Global South and a bridge between developed and developing countries.
2. Government Tightens Sugar Stockholding Limit
The Union Government has reduced the stockholding limit for sugar dealers from 4,000 quintals to 2,000 quintals. The revised limit will take effect on 15 September and remain in force until 30 November 2026. Dealers cannot retain sugar for more than 30 days from the date of receipt. Kolkata and its extended metropolitan area retain a 4,000-quintal limit due to specific supply requirements. The measure seeks to curb hoarding and speculative trading, maintain adequate domestic supply and protect consumers during the festive season.

The Digital India BHASHINI Division organised a BHASHINI Shilpi developer session at the Embassy of India in Kathmandu on 31 August 2026. Developers, students, technologists and innovators explored BHASHINI APIs for translation, speech recognition, speech synthesis and multilingual digital services. The programme showcased India’s Digital Public Infrastructure approach and promoted India–Nepal collaboration in Language AI. It also demonstrated how inclusive technology can reduce linguistic barriers and improve access to digital public services across South Asia.
