About Cyclones:

  • A cyclone is a massive air mass that centers around the core of a region of low pressure. Usually, it is accompanied by severe weather and storms.
  • According to the NDMA, a cyclone is defined by inward spiraling winds that rotate clockwise in the South and anticlockwise in the North.
Classification of Cyclones:

●   There are two types of cyclones i.e. tropical cyclones and extra tropical cyclones, also known as temperate cyclones.

●   The term “Tropical Cyclone” is used by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO, 1976) to describe weather systems where winds are higher than “Gale Force” (minimum of 34 knots or 63 kph).

●   Tropical cyclones are the offspring of the ocean and atmosphere, propelled by the heat from the sea, high planetary winds, temperate westerlies, easterly trades, and their own violent energy.

●   Cyclones in India are categorized according to the following: Storm surges; the strength of the associated winds and unusually high rainfall events. Although they are known to originate in the Polar Regions, extra tropical cyclones are known to occur in temperate zones and high latitude regions.

●   Tropical cyclones are storms that form in the areas between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn.

The terminology used globally:

●  Typhoons in the Pacific and China Seas;

●  Hurricanes in the Atlantic and Caribbean seas, off the West Indian islands

●  Tornadoes in southern USA and the Guinea regions of West Africa.

●  Willy-willies in Australian side.
