CRIMINAL LAW BILLS:

Opposition parties express concerns at an all-party meeting, urging not to rush through three Bills aimed at replacing existing criminal laws.

Criticism is directed at the Hindi titles of the Bills, labeled as an “insult to people of south India” and a “symbol of Hindi imperialism.”

Criminal Law Bills:

  • The government introduces three Bills to overhaul the criminal justice system by replacing key laws:
  • The Indian Penal Code (IPC) of 1860,
  • The Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) of 1973, and
  • The Indian Evidence Act (IEA) of 1872.
  • The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Bill is proposed to replace the IPC.
  • The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita Bill is intended to replace the CrPC.
  • The Bharatiya Sakshya Bill aims to replace the IEA (Indian Evidence Act, 1872).
  • Significantly, these Bills don’t act as mere Amendments but offer a comprehensive replacement of the existing Acts.

The overhaul of these laws provides a unique opportunity to revamp the entire criminal justice system rather than addressing specific gaps through Amendment Bills.
