About the Divergent Estimates on Cotton Production:

  • The Committee on Cotton Production and Consumption (COCPC) predicts cotton output for the current season to be 323 lakh bales, with exports reaching 27 lakh bales.
  • However, the Cotton Association of India (CAI) suggests a lower production estimate of 309 lakh bales, citing expected lower output in Telangana compared to COCPC’s projections.
  • CAI President Atul Ganatra attributes the disparity to data from the Telangana ginners association, indicating that Telangana’s production is higher than last year but not as high as COCPC’s estimate.
About Cultivated Cotton Species in India:

●   India cultivates all four species of cultivated cotton: Gossypium arboreum and Herbaceum (Asian cotton), G. barbadense (Egyptian cotton), and G. hirsutum (American Upland cotton).
